A recipe collection from Alabama’s heartland

Many Alabamians have sent recipes to the “Cook of the Month” column in Alabama Living magazine, published by the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives (AREA). If your recipe has been featured there, you probably think about strangers making it, just like I imagine people pulling a pan of my rolls out of the freezer and popping it into the oven. It’s gratifying to know my bread brings people together around the dinner table where they can really connect. And isn’t that why we enjoy cooking and sharing recipes? We savor the flavors, but we savor time spent together more.

This recipe collection, The Best of Alabama Living, includes the magazine’s winning recipes from the past eight years, along with winners of AREA’s Alabama National Fair cooking contests. From delicious appetizers to main dishes and desserts, you’ll find more than 250 of your fellow Alabamians’ best dishes. They’re recipes prepared in kitchens powered by the 22 electric cooperatives across Alabama. Our Southern ways of life work day to day because cooperatives provide us with power.

AREA gives even more by awarding scholarships to Alabama students, and it represents rural communities’ interests before the state legislature, U.S. Congress, and regulatory agencies. This network of cooperatives helps us live comfortably and productively—and allows us to keep cooking.
